I was reading a blog entry in Reinventing Erica asking What’s Your Agenda? and some of the things she said inspired me. Before she takes on any project, she asks herself these three things:
- At the end of this project, will I look back and be proud of the goal I have achieved? Will it bring more joy and value to my life and to those around me?
- Will I have the opportunity to learn something, to teach something, to champion a cause, or to bring awareness to an important (but overlooked) issue? Will I grow? Will I help others to grow?
- Can I bring all of myself to the table? Can I give 100%? Will this project insight my passions?
I see that I could benefit from asking these questions myself.
Right now I find myself doing a lot of projects, many of which I feel obligated to do and really have little interest doing. And then I have the projects I want to do, that I am passionate about, that are half done or sitting on the side burner because I don’t have the proper time or resources to attend to it properly.
These three questions are brilliant. They not only help me identify which projects I want to do, they also make me think about the project in ways I might have not been thinking about it. For example, by asking question 2, I may see how it could make a difference in an area I hadn’t thought of when the project was first presented to me.
And since Erica has kindly open-sourced her mind, I will go ahead and adopt these questions or similar ones for myself.
