Degree vs. Experience

By | March 13, 2008

One thing that I have always been secretly ashamed of is the fact that I don’t have a college degree. And now years later, after working with college interns and students, I have started to realize how much more I know than they do. Heck, I have meet millionaires who I know more about business than they do. I sometimes forget how much knowledge I have attained over the years and how much experience I have obtained. I do have over 12 years experience running a business… 22 years if you count the various “business ventures” I started as a kid. I guess I was always an entrepreneur, starting my first business at 13 years old, making a small profit my first year in business. Pretty good for a 13 year old with no training.

Sometimes I take my knowledge for granted. I mean, doesn’t everyone know the difference between an LLC and a Corporation? Doesn’t everyone know how to use page breaks to space a document? Doesn’t everyone know that the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42?

I guess it is kinda amusing having college students asking me to help them with their homework, when I don’t even have a degree, yet it is obvious I understand the concepts way more than they do.

And, no, I am not going to do your homework for you. 😉

So maybe I need to stop being ashamed that I don’t have a degree. I have the knowledge and the concepts… and that is what counts. 🙂
